This weekend: Plant trees for orcas at Squaxin Park, plus a fairgrounds swap meet, a weavers' sale and a downtown duck hunt
Orca Recovery Day brings a volunteer planting party to Squaxin Park and free family activities to the WET Science Center on Saturday, Oct. 17. Also this weekend, the Secondhand Safari swap meet and the Olympia Weavers Guild sale fill the Thurston County Fairgrounds, and downtown's Halloween scavenger hunt begins.

Volunteers can spend Saturday planting native trees and shrubs at Olympia's Squaxin Park as part of Orca Recovery Day, a statewide day of action for Puget Sound's endangered Southern Resident orcas.
The Thurston Conservation District and the City of Olympia host the work party 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Shelter 1, 2600 East Bay Drive NE, according to the city. Along with planting and removing invasive plants, the day includes a guided shore walk and refreshments.
Why orcas, and why trees. About 80% of the Southern Residents' diet is salmon, which are also endangered, the conservation district says. Restoring shoreline and stream habitat helps the fish, and in turn the whales.
How to join. Register through the Thurston Conservation District. The city's volunteer page says sign-up there alone isn't enough. Tools, gloves and light refreshments are provided. Wear sturdy shoes that can get muddy, and bring a water bottle. An adult must accompany children under 14, and teens without a parent need an online waiver. Questions: 360-753-8365 or [email protected].
A drier option. Downtown, the WET Science Center, 500 Adams St. NE, holds a free Orca Recovery Day event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, where families can practice ways to protect orca habitat and make an orca to take home, according to Experience Olympia & Beyond.
