The Olympia School Board holds its second school-closure hearing tonight, Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m., at LP Brown Elementary, 2000 26th Ave. NW, and on Zoom.

How to speak. Sign up online or on-site until 7 p.m. Speakers get three minutes, or two if more than 50 sign up. Current LP Brown students speak first. Zoom screen names must match sign-ups exactly. Written comments can be mailed to the School Board at 111 Bethel Street NE, Olympia, WA 98506.

What the district's analysis says. According to the district's Policy 6883 report and FAQ:

  • Enrollment: 305 students; about 58% ride the bus.
  • Building: lowest facility rating in a 2023 study; modernizing would cost at least $47.7 million.
  • Savings: about $1.08 million a year, of roughly $3.14 million for all three closures.
  • Students: split between Hansen and Garfield, with more going to Hansen.
  • Bus rides: average grows from about 18.5 to 20.7 minutes.

Asked about delaying, Superintendent Patrick Murphy said "deeper cuts will be needed elsewhere or deeper cuts will be needed in the future," The JOLT reported.

What's next. Madison's hearing is Monday, Oct. 19. The board votes Nov. 12.
